As we build the new church, I’ve sought to keep the parish focused together on the process, not just as an economic and physical endeavor, but as a spiritual endeavor. Last fall our Program Brochure theme was “Breaking Ground,” this Spring the theme was “Laying the Foundation,” and this Fall we are Raising the Roof!
Young people think of Raising the Roof as a dance move: pushing your hands in the air (palms upward) as a kind of soulful military press. It’s a boisterous, enthusiastic way of saying, “Let’s get this party started!”
Raising the Roof for an older generation meant participating in a barn raising. The whole community would come together to focus on a common project: laying timbers to frame the walls of a barn, so that all at once the barn was raised up so that the roof could be put on. I like this idea because it’s exactly what we’ve done, we have come together as a whole community of Christians to accomplish a huge task to which God has called us: raising the roof of His Holy Church!
But the definition I like best for the expression, Raising The Roof, is “...to push through limitations, to rise above daunting obstacles... .” Put the three of these ideas together and we have the perfect image for what St. Peter’s has been up to: God’s people, pushing through challenging obstacles, to raise the roof of God’s Holy Church in celebration of His call to live a faithful, Christian life, to be “a city on a hill,” a beacon of the hope, joy, and truth that is in Jesus Christ! I have to say, it does make me feel like dancing! Join the party, jump into the life of God’s Church and pray for the future which is being established even now!
